If you know me personally, than you might already know that I suffer from severe migraines.
These are not like, “Oh, I have a headache, give me some ibuprofen and I’ll be fine” migraines. The migraine pain that I (and thousands of others) have been “blessed” with doesn’t compare to a regular headache.
In fact, I wouldn’t mind having a little headache, every day of the month, if it meant I never had a migraine again!
This sort of pain is hard to describe to someone who has never dealt with it. People often look at you like you’re crazy, a hypochondriac or even a liar.
None of which are true.
It’s not just in your head and its not just “in your head“.
The pain is very real, very severe and it’s debilitating.
You can’t function.
You can’t think.
It hurts to move any part of your body, not just your head.
In my case, it starts out with a simple aura – white bursts of lights in my eyes. And sometimes, that’s all that will happen for several days.
Then, the tension begins…it moves from my shoulders, to my neck and down my spine.
Usually, within a few hours of the tension beginning, my head starts to ache.
The aching continues to intensify, sometimes for a few hours…other times for a few days…until it feels like someone is repetitively moving a butcher knife in and out of my brain.
The noise around me, sounds like it’s both a million miles away and right in my face, all at the same time.
Most often, I end up with blurry vision, vomiting and uncontrollable shaking, before it’s over. And then, it takes several days to recover from the remaining dull ache throughout my body.
While not everyone gets all of those symptoms or even, all of the symptoms of a migraine, anyone who suffers from migraines…true migraines…is likely in a lot of pain.
It’s just not fun at all…
This is NOT a simple headache that can easily be remedied with over the counter medication.
Of course, you should always see a licensed medical professional to make sure that migraines are truly what’s wrong with you and that you aren’t suffering from a different health condition, especially if you are pregnant.

You can explain your symptoms and sure, if diagnosed with migraines, they’ll provide you with some sort of “new” medication that is sure to get rid of them.
But, it doesn’t always work.
And furthermore, do you really want to take medication every day? I know I don’t!
For me, medication just covers up the pain for a little while…until it doesn’t.
It’s just not worth it for me, but please, make your own decisions about your own health.
So, what do you do, when you’re on your knees, hanging over the toilet bowl, like you just drank down the bar?
Me? I drink some more!
Sounds crazy, right?
I know! But, I’m not talking about alcohol.
I’m talking about hydrating.
And not with water, either.
But with an electrolyte drinks like Gatorade, POWERade or Pedialyte (yes, I am well aware that this is meant for babies and young children, but it works for me!).
About 3 months ago, I suffered from one of the worst migraines that I’ve ever had.
It was 4 straight days of tension and pain and then, severe vomiting.
Afterwards, my husband suggested I drink a Gatorade to re-hydrate, which I don’t usually drink, because honestly…I don’t like them.
But, I started to feel better, right away.
So, I drank another one and for the first time in my life, my symptoms were almost gone in less than an 1 hour.
Yes, I was still tired and a little sore from the tension, but the overwhelming ache that usually lasts for days, was just gone.
So, I did some research and it turns out that migraine patients are often treated with electrolytes when they seek emergency medical attention during an episode.
This was new to me, as I’ve never headed to the ER.
So, I continued searching only to find that many migraine patients are often suffering from electrolyte imbalance and/or dehydration…regularly!
And drinking excess amounts of water is actually not a good idea during an episode.
This article also discusses the need to keep hydrated all the time in order to reduce migraines.
I decided to give hydration a test and I was surprised at the results!
You see, I’ve always drank A LOT of water…in fact, there are some days where I can easily drink a gallon or more of just water. I love the stuff!
Growing up and living in the Catskill Mountains of New York has provided me with some of the cleanest, freshest drinking water in the world and I’m lucky to have it.
But, sometimes, as with all things, moderation is the key. And maybe I was just taking advantage of having all this lovely, spring water!
But, back to the test, I decided to try cutting down on my water intake…just a little bit. I added 1 – 12 ounce bottle of Gatorade to my daily diet and guess what?
I haven’t had a full-on migraine episode in 3 months!
Leading up to this discovery, I was having 3 or 4 migraines every month.
Since discovering this little home remedy, I’ve had 2 episodes begin. But begin is all they did, because each time I’ve had an aura or the start of some migraine tension I drink a 2nd electrolyte drink that day and it seems to fade away.
I’ve tried all kinds of migraine medications and remedies over the years, but I’ve never had one work as well as these electrolyte drinks.
It’s amazing!
Again, I am not a medical professional and I cannot guarantee that this will work for you…but it does for me and I hope, if you decide to try it, it works for you, too!
