According to the National Day Calendar, 100 years ago, in 1917, the Salvation Army Lassies began serving doughnuts to the soldiers of WWI. In 1938, the ladies made the first Friday in June an official holiday and called it National Doughnut Day. It has since served as a day to celebrate not only doughnuts, but also the ladies who risked their lives to bring doughnuts and home cooked meals to the soldiers on the front lines. Pretty cool, right?
So, what could be better? It’s freebie Friday and it’s national excuse for eating doughnuts day!
