Learn to love your handwriting with The Joy of Lettering…
I’ve been playing around with lettering for a few years now and I love it. But, I want to get better at it.
I’m not real confident in my lettering and while people have complimented my handwriting for years, I still don’t feel like it’s as spectacular as they say.
I do have a few cards in my shop that have my lettering on them, but, I’m not real impressed with them.
In fact, I’ve considered getting rid of my greeting card line altogether. They’re not my best sellers and honestly, I don’t love most of my cards.
However, it seems as though every time I convince myself to get rid of them, I’ll sell a slew. So, up til now, I’ve kept them…even if they aren’t my best work.
“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan
So, I need some more practice…
I’ve been on the lookout for tutorial books whenever I get to the craft store, specifically The Joy of Lettering and Lettering with Purpose.
Of course, I’m cheap and I never end up buying them when I do find them in the store. But, yesterday was my lucky day!
The girls and I had dentist appointments in Rutland and of course, that means we had to stop by Hobby Lobby while we were there. I think it’s my favorite store in the whole world! There wasn’t a Hobby Lobby near us in New York, so, whenever we visited my sister in North Carolina, I would rush to the store like my life depended on it and spend too much money on stuff I really didn’t need.
Lucky for me, when we moved to Vermont, the Hobby Lobby sign stood out and grabbed me as we drove through Rutland for the first time. It was meant to be…good thing it’s an hour away!
Yesterday, while we were wandering around the store, I went in search of the clearance racks…as I always do…and there it was, standing out for all to see…the very last book on the rack! The Joy of Lettering…and it was marked down to $5.49 from $21.95!
How could I not?
So, yeah…it came home with me. And I’m so glad it did!
I even played around a bit with my graphic pen that Bug bought me for my birthday and wrote out an alphabet.
It looks a bit like a Kindergartner wrote it, but hey…it’s not easy to write with a graphic pen! My goal in that was to keep the all the letters relatively close to the same size. I think I succeeded in that, at least.
Regardless, this book is awesome and it leaves me wishing I’d bought it sooner! From start to finish, it’s packed full of tips and tricks, along with tidbits of history about lettering, a variety of techniques and a ton of inspiration.
So, I’m sure to get better with practice…right?
If you have any interest in lettering, as a hobby or a career, get yourself down to your local craft store and pick up this book (or order it online…if you can stand the wait). It’s worth every penny of the $21.95 retail price!
But, guess what?
If you use Ebates you can save 10% off at Barnes and Noble (today only!) + get 2% cash back! Why wait?!
Not an Ebates user? What are you waiting for?! You could be saving tons of money on the stuff you already buy…it’s crazy not to use it. I’ve made over $350 in cash back since I started using it! Sign up for free here!
